Biocarbon Plant Basic and Detailed Design (Evolys Quebec)

Client: Evolys Quebec Inc. (JV between Rio Tinto and Aymium)
Location: Thurso, Quebec

Process design, design and detailed engineering, and procurement support for a biocarbon plant to produce biocarbon pellets as a renewable alternative to metallurgical carbon additive within Rio Tinto's plants in Canada.

Critical Project Elements:

  • Participation in pilot plant operation to optimize process and CAPEX
  • Aggressive schedule
  • Stringent budget

Key Project Deliverables:

  • Process design optimization through pilot plant operation
  • Establish emissions levels to assist with environmental permitting
  • Finalize mass and energy balance, flowsheets (PFD, P&ID), major equipment technical specifications, and data sheets
  • Mechanical, Structural, Electrical, and Instrumentation design and layout
  • Evaluation and repurposing of used and/or existing facility equipment
  • Major equipment:    
             
    • Direct rotary dryer for feedstock
    •        
    • Combuster/Reactor system with gas recycled to dryer
    •        
    • Pellet mill with associated material handling and off-gas system
    •    
  • Provide technical input into bid clarifications and technical bid evaluations
  • Participate in HAZOP
