Computational Fluid Dynamic Modeling of the Liquidation Furnace

Gas Cleaning Technologies (GCT) was retained to model the freeboard temperature distribution in the proposed MetalEurop liquation furnace using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The reverberatory-type furnace, fired by natural gas/air, was analyzed to optimize heat distribution, prevent refractory wear, and minimize off-gas volume.

Key Objectives Included:

  • Prevent burner flames from contacting furnace roof and walls
  • Ensure complete combustion of fuel before contacting charge/bath
  • Maintain uniform gas temperature above the bath level
  • Optimize burner location, discharge angle, and velocity
